Larry and Yucci

This handsome fellow is Larry, a little nutcake I'm caring for while his mom's in the hospital. Larry's quite the character. Today, when seeing me walk towards his litter box, he stormed by, jumped in, and peed quick before I could clean the box out. He looked pleased about his quick move. Larry loves to visit the porch, and gets under the furniture when it's time to come in.

Larry's not the only one who lives there. Yucci is a sweet bunny with one back leg that sticks out like a tripod. Since his parents were closely related, it's not surprising he has some problems. Larry thinks Yucci's great. The two of them run around the porch and play together. I told them their mom misses them very much, and hopes she returns home soon.

A Bird in the Apartment!

Last summer, I had an unexpected visitor to my apartment. Having just returned home from an afternoon pet sitting, I was checking my emails and noticed my cat acting jumpy. Assuming a noisy truck or neighbor was the cause, I thought little of it. Suddenly, a black object went hurtling past my desk heading straight for the kitchen. Madison dove for cover. Racing down the hall, I expected to find a creepy bat flapping around the windows, but instead saw a frightened starling eyeing me from the top of my curtains, as if saying, "How do I get out of here!?" He had squeezed through an opening in a window that had slid down enough to let him in. Not wanting to hurt the poor guy, I chased him with a towel until finally cornering him on the counter top. Carrying him downstairs, I released him to the trees where he looked very happy and relieved. He wasn't the only one. When I told some clients this story, a few had a strange reaction. "Oh!" they said, "A bird in the house means death!" Well, it's been months now, and nobody has died yet. Has anyone else heard that particular superstition?

Giant George

Here's somebody my Madison would stare in wonder at. This colossus is Giant George, the Guinness world's record holder as the largest dog on the face of the Earth. Judging from this picture, I think they may be right. George is a Great Dane that measures almost 43 inches from the bottom of his feet to the top of his shoulders. He weighs 245 pounds. That is one BIG dog. He lives in Tucson, Arizona, eats 110 pounds of food a month and sleeps in his own queen sized bed. As a dog walker, instead of walking George, I could saddle him up and ride him. He would take ME for a walk! Click HERE to see an article and some more pictures.

Paws and Matilda

Last week I stayed with a pair of great pets named Paws and Matilda. As you can see, Paws was a handsome and charming Westie, who didn't mind having his picture taken. This was especially true if paid with a treat. He was an affectionate little guy, following me around, and sleeping very nicely at the bottom of the bed. He only woke occasionally to play with his quacking duck toy.

Paws' sister is a tabby named Matilda. In this picture, she'd just finished a meal and was happily licking her face. She's friendly too, though she prefers it if Paws doesn't get too close.

The neighbors across the street have a pair of horses who have been escaping lately. I was told to call them if I saw the horses parading past the windows. Fortunately, they stayed where they belonged.

The neighbor's also have a sweet dog named Amber. Amber liked walking with us, and always waited for a treat when we returned home.

                                Time to play.

Weird Book Room

I just discovered AbeBooks has a Weird Book Room on their website. It's a bit amazing how some of the books highlighted managed to get published. Do the authors' have a special secret? Are they related to the publisher? Naturally, some of the weird books have a pet theme. Here's a few you may, or may not, own and enjoy.

This one looks like fun!

I always knew cats were talented.

This volume is supposed to be an excellent book explaining physics.

Most of the non-pet books are much weirder than the dog and cat examples. If you have a weird book you'd like to share, you can email the suggestion to AbeBooks, and they may just include it on their site.

Winston and Toby

This is Winston, a very old Beagle I sat last weekend. Poor Winston had a trying time, as his home has a backyard similar to a  poop covered ski slope, and he rolled to the bottom after losing his footing and stumbling. Coming to a rest, he lay there on his back, with his legs sticking up straight in the air. Thinking he was dead, I nearly had a heart attack. After a minute, he righted himself and tottered off. Needless to say, I was VERY relieved!

This is Toby, Winston's brother. Toby came from a Beagle rescue, and can be nervous around strangers. Fortunately, he likes me just fine. I love what his ears are doing in this picture. He looks like he's ready to take off like a helicopter. He's a very sweet thing who drools a lot.

Here's one more picture of Toby. Toby is a perfect name for a Beagle.

Joy Brown - Photographer

In my last post, I wrote about two little dogs named Maddy and Casey. Their "mom" is Joy Brown, a wonderful photographer from Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Joy started taking pictures in 1983, and has since amassed a portfolio of shots ranging from pets and landscapes, to flowers and the Boston Red Sox. Every spring and summer, she attends art shows in the New England area where she sells her photos and makes new contacts. She recently won a pair of Hallmark contests, and her cards are currently being sold at Hallmark's stores.

Here's a crowd of Yorkies!

I love the hat!

April is cute!

To visit Joy's website and view other pictures, order prints, and learn her show schedule, click right HERE. I'm including a picture of one of her winning Hallmark cards. I hope Hallmark doesn't mind! HALLMARK has a website too!

The Golden Retriever is named Travis. I've written about him a couple of times on this blog.

Casey and Maddy

Casey

I just finished an overnight stay caring for two dogs named Casey and Maddy. Casey is the reason the overnight is required, as he has diabetes, and needs many trips outside to urinate. He also needs nine units of insulin every morning. Unfortunately, the diabetes has caused him to loose his sight. A clever little Maltese, he's learned to expect a baby carrot after each bathroom break. He now tries to finagle carrots by requesting pee breaks ten minutes after the last break. Casey loves carrots.

                                          Maddy

Casey's not the only one who loves carrots. His sister Maddy also gets excited when the carrot bag leaves the refrigerator. And when Maddy sniffs food, she snorts and wheezes as if having an asthma attack. Since she's a piggy who'll take Casey's carrot if given the opportunity, I have to stand and watch while they eat their treat.

Here's another picture of Maddy. She wants to go out and chase squirrels.

I can't get them out fast enough!

Kitten and Crow

Here's another video. This time it's about a kitten and a crow. I've been spending way too much time on You Tube lately.

The 3 Second Myth

There's a well known myth about fish and their three second memory. Apparently, it's just not true. According to Australian scientists, fish can remember learned information about prey for up to five months. In fact, carp caught by a fisherman will avoid hooks for a year or more. Fish can even be taught to associate sounds with food. So, as you watch your tropical fish swimming about, keep in mind there's a lot more going on in their little heads than you think. To read a brief article about brainy fish, click HERE

Armor for Cats

Maybe what those poor medieval cats needed was some finely crafted armor. While exploring the internet , I found a wonderful Canadian artist named Jeff de Boer, who's been creating armor for animals since the 1990's. Though he began with mice, he soon branched out to cats as well.

Here's another example. I love the chain mail.

A set of mouse armor! This carries Tom and Jerry to a whole new level. To see more of Jeff de Boer's work, visit his site HERE.

Mr. de Boers also crafts some great space sculptures. This one is called Ro-Cat: The 1034 Twin Rocket Flying Suit.

I found something else about armored cats. The Wearybridge Department of Armored Cats  is a hilarious page by a young man named Morgan. He calls it an "evil experiment" to attract people to his spot on MySpace. He really is very funny.
